Route planning

Practical city combinations

A strong China itinerary usually works better when cities have different jobs. Use Shanghai as an easy arrival point, Beijing for history, Hangzhou for scenery, Chengdu for food and western China access, and Sanya for a warm-weather break. Avoid adding too many flights or train station transfers to a short trip.

First China trip, 8-10 days

Shanghai 3 days, Hangzhou 2 days, Beijing 4 days

Best balance of easy arrival, classic scenery, and headline history.

Food and relaxed pace, 7-9 days

Chengdu 4 days, Beijing or Shanghai 3-4 days

Good for travelers who want pandas, teahouses, hotpot, and one major gateway city.

Winter escape, 6-10 days

Sanya 4-6 days, Shanghai 2-3 days

Best when northern China is cold and you want a simple beach-and-city pairing.

City FAQ

Common China city planning questions

Which China city is easiest for first-time foreign visitors?

Shanghai is usually the easiest first city because airports, metro signs, hotels, restaurants, and international services are the most foreigner-friendly. Beijing is still very manageable, but it requires more advance booking and more careful daily routing.

How many Chinese cities should I visit in one trip?

For a first 8-10 day trip, two or three cities is enough. China is large, and airport transfers, train stations, security checks, and hotel changes can consume more time than expected. Choose one gateway city, one cultural or scenic stop, and one optional extension.

Which city is best for a longer stay in China?

Shanghai is the easiest long-stay base for services and English coverage, Chengdu is stronger for lower costs and relaxed living, and Hangzhou offers a middle ground with scenery and a strong tech economy. Sanya works well for winter stays rather than year-round city life.
