Guilin Travel 2026: Li River, Yangshuo and Longji Plan
Guilin planning depends on river timing and where you sleep. Compare Li River cruises, Yangshuo stays, Longji terraces, airport transfers and work limits.
Best for
Li River scenery, Yangshuo countryside, karst landscapes, slower nature days
Time needed
3-4 days
Best season
March-October, with April-May and September-October easiest
Budget
500-950 RMB/day before private drivers, 2026 prices
Guilin is really a regional scenery base, not just a city. The best version usually includes Yangshuo and maybe Longji, not only one night in town.
Weather matters more here than in the big cities. Rain can make the karst hills moody and beautiful, but it can also ruin bike rides and terrace views.
Plan transport carefully. Drivers, cruises, buses, and station transfers are a bigger part of the trip than first-timers expect.
Where to stay
Pick the area before the hotel
Use Guilin city for arrival, departure, and the first night. Sleep in Yangshuo if scenery and cafes are the real reason you came, and choose the Yulong River countryside only if quiet mornings matter more than late-night convenience.
Central Guilin
Arrival night, airport access, Reed Flute Cave, city food
300-700 RMB/night for reliable city hotels; 800-1,200 RMB/night for better river-view rooms, 2026 OTA checks
Good: Practical, good for transfers, easiest for airport and rail connections
Watch: Less scenic than Yangshuo; do not spend the whole trip here unless logistics require it
Yangshuo West Street / nearby lanes
Scenery, cafes, river days, first Yangshuo stay
300-900 RMB/night for guesthouses and mid-range hotels; 1,000-1,800 RMB/night for stronger boutique stays, 2026 OTA checks
Good: Easy food, tour pickup, countryside access
Watch: Can be loud and touristy; check distance from bars before booking
Yulong River countryside
Quiet stays and bike routes
450-1,200 RMB/night for countryside inns; 1,300-2,500 RMB/night for premium view stays, 2026 OTA checks
Good: Beautiful mornings, calmer roads
Watch: Taxi-dependent after dark
Longji Rice Terraces villages
Photography, hiking, overnight terrace views
250-700 RMB/night for village guesthouses; 800-1,300 RMB/night for better-view rooms, 2026 OTA checks
Watch: Long transfers, stairs, weaker Wi-Fi, weather risk
Transport
Airport and city movement
Guilin Liangjiang Airport is west of town. Many travelers then continue to Yangshuo by cruise, train, bus, or driver.
Route
Cost
Time
Airport to central Guilin
Airport bus cheaper; DiDi 90-160 RMB, 2026 estimate
40-60 minutes
Guilin to Yangshuo by Li River cruise
Around 300-500 RMB depending on boat class, 2026 estimate
4-5 hours
Guilin/Yangshuo to Longji Rice Terraces
Private driver often 600-1,000 RMB/day, 2026 estimate
2.5-4 hours each way depending on start
Guilin North/West rail station to central Guilin
2-5 RMB by bus or 25-70 RMB by DiDi, 2026 estimate
20-45 minutes depending on station
Yangshuo rail station to Yangshuo town
20-35 RMB by shuttle or 80-140 RMB by DiDi/private car, 2026 estimate
40-60 minutes
In Guilin city, DiDi is easy and buses cover basic trips, but there is no metro. Around Yangshuo, bikes, scooters, local drivers, and tour pickups matter more than city transit; confirm helmets, battery range, and return time before renting e-scooters.
What to see
Book the hard tickets first
Do not treat Guilin like a museum city. Pick weather-sensitive scenery first, then fill gaps with caves, markets, and meals.
Li River cruise
Around 300-500 RMB, 2026 estimate
Half day
Classic first-time route; choose this if you want the famous karst sequence without logistics stress.
Yulong River / Yangshuo countryside
Bike rental 20-60 RMB/day; raft costs vary, 2026 estimate
Half to full day
Best in the morning before traffic and heat build.
Longji Rice Terraces
Around 80 RMB entry, 2026 estimate
Full day or overnight
Only go if visibility is decent; fog can hide the whole point.
Reed Flute Cave
Around 90-120 RMB, 2026 estimate
1-1.5 hours
Useful Guilin-city filler for rain, heat, or an arrival day when river logistics are too tight.
Xingping old town and 20 RMB viewpoint
Old town free; raft/photo extras vary, 2026
2-4 hours
Better early or late; midday tour groups can make the famous viewpoint feel crowded.
Food
Meals worth planning around
Guilin food is simple and local. Yangshuo adds tourist restaurants, which is convenient, but prices climb fast around West Street.
Guilin rice noodles
Citywide breakfast shops
Order: Mifen with pickles, peanuts, chili, and broth on the side
8-18 RMB/person, 2026 estimate
Yangshuo beer fish
Yangshuo

Terrace village meals

Order: Braised pork with Lipu taro, greens, rice
60-140 RMB/person, 2026 estimate

Digital nomads
Work setup and longer stays
Yangshuo can work for a scenic remote-work week if calls are light. It is not as reliable as Shanghai, Chengdu, or Hangzhou.
Guesthouse Wi-Fi varies widely. Yangshuo town cafes near West Street and the river are usable for email and writing, while countryside inns are better for offline work blocks than calls. Bring strong mobile data and avoid promising critical video calls from rural stays or Longji.
8,000-15,000 RMB/month for a comfortable scenic stay: 3,500-7,500 RMB guesthouse or monthly apartment, 2,000-3,800 RMB food, 500-1,500 RMB drivers/scooters/transfers, and 1,000-2,200 RMB cafes, activities, laundry, and extras, 2026 estimate

FAQ
Common questions
Should I stay in Guilin or Yangshuo?
Use Guilin for arrival logistics, but stay in Yangshuo if scenery is the main reason for the trip.
Is the Li River cruise worth it?
For a first visit, yes. It is the simplest way to see the famous karst section without arranging many separate transfers.
How many days do I need for Guilin and Yangshuo?
Three days is the practical minimum. Four days lets you add Longji or a slower Yangshuo countryside day.
