Beijing Travel 2026: Where to Stay and What to Book

Beijing needs advance bookings and smart hotel location choices. Plan Forbidden City tickets, Great Wall routes, airport transfers, food and realistic costs.

Best for
Imperial history, hutongs, museums, Great Wall day trips
Time needed
4-5 days
Best season
September-October; late April can be good if dust is low
Budget
650-1,100 RMB/day before intercity transport, 2026 prices

Beijing rewards travelers who plan mornings carefully. The Forbidden City, National Museum, and popular Great Wall sections all punish late starts, and some require real-name reservations.

The city is huge. Pick a hotel around Dongcheng, Qianmen, or Sanlitun based on your itinerary rather than chasing the cheapest room at the edge of the subway map.

Daxing Airport is clean and efficient but far. Capital Airport still wins for many central hotels, especially when traffic is not terrible.

Where to stay

Pick the area before the hotel

Stay inside the 2nd or 3rd Ring if this is your first Beijing visit. A cheaper hotel near the 5th Ring can cost you an hour each way. Budget 350-550 RMB/night for simple business hotels, 600-1,100 RMB for reliable mid-range rooms, and 1,300 RMB+ for international five-star properties in central districts.

Wangfujing / Dongdan

First-timers focused on Forbidden City, Tiananmen, museums

500-900 RMB/night for decent mid-range rooms; 1,200-2,200 RMB for classic five-star hotels, 2026 OTA checks

Good: Walkable to classic sights, Line 1 and Line 5 access, easy taxis

Watch: Tourist restaurants and weekend crowds

Qianmen / Dashilan

Travelers who want old Beijing texture and evening walks

450-850 RMB/night for boutique and business hotels; hutong guesthouses vary widely, 2026 OTA checks

Good: Hutong lanes, Tiananmen access, lively snack streets

Watch: Some lanes are hard for taxis; rooms can be small

Sanlitun / Dongzhimen

Nightlife, embassies, international restaurants, airport rail

700-1,600 RMB/night, 2026 OTA checks

Good: Better English coverage, Airport Express at Dongzhimen, bars

Watch: Less convenient for Forbidden City mornings

Guomao / CBD

Business travelers, tower views, polished serviced apartments

800-1,800 RMB/night; serviced apartments often 16,000-28,000 RMB/month, 2026 checks

Good: Line 1 and Line 10, strong hotel standards, easier gyms and coworking

Watch: Corporate feel and weaker hutong atmosphere

Transport

Airport and city movement

PEK is usually easier for central and northeast Beijing. PKX is modern but far south; use the airport express or pre-book a ride if arriving late. For very late arrivals, confirm your hotel name in Chinese and expect tolls on top of metered fares.

RouteCostTime
Capital Airport (PEK) to Dongzhimen25 RMB airport express, 2026 fareAbout 30-40 minutes to Dongzhimen, then subway or taxi
Daxing Airport (PKX) to Caoqiao35 RMB Daxing Airport Express, 2026 fareAbout 20 minutes to Caoqiao, then Line 10 or taxi
Taxi/DiDi to central Beijing120-220 RMB from PEK, 180-320 RMB from PKX depending on traffic, 2026 estimate45-90 minutes is normal; Friday evenings can be worse
Airport bus to major districtsTypically 20-40 RMB depending on route, 2026 estimateUseful for budget arrivals, but slower and less obvious with luggage

The subway is the reliable backbone: fares usually run 3-8 RMB, and Line 1, Line 2, Line 5, Line 8, and Line 10 cover most visitor days. DiDi is useful at night, but central traffic around Chang'an Avenue and the 2nd Ring can crawl. Shared bikes are good for hutong hops, while taxis often cannot stop directly at Tiananmen or Forbidden City security zones.

What to see

Book the hard tickets first

Book the heavyweight sights first, then build the softer hutong and park days around them. I would not stack Forbidden City and Mutianyu Great Wall on the same day unless you enjoy being exhausted.

Forbidden City

60 RMB peak / 40 RMB off-peak, 2026 official ticket range

3-4 hours

Reserve ahead with passport details; no same-day ticket counter strategy is reliable. Enter from the Meridian Gate on the south side and exit north toward Jingshan.

Temple of Heaven

Around 34 RMB combo ticket in peak season, 2026 estimate

2 hours

Go before 9:00 to see locals dancing, singing, and playing cards.

Mutianyu Great Wall

About 45 RMB entry; shuttle/cable options extra, 2026 estimate

Half to full day

Cleaner and less frantic than Badaling for most foreign visitors.

Summer Palace

Around 30 RMB entry, 60 RMB combo ticket in peak season, 2026 estimate

3-4 hours

Book if required during holiday periods; pair with Line 4 and avoid midday summer heat.

Lama Temple and Wudaoying Hutong

Lama Temple about 25 RMB; hutong walk free, 2026 estimate

2-3 hours

A useful half-day when Forbidden City tickets sell out.

Food

Meals worth planning around

Beijing food is not just Peking duck. Build meals around roast duck, zhajiangmian, jianbing, hotpot or copper-pot lamb, chaogan, and old-school pastries. The best meals often happen in plain-looking rooms where the menu is only half translated.

Siji Minfu Peking Duck

Dengshikou / central branches

Order: Half duck, zhajiangmian, seasonal vegetables

180-280 RMB/person, 2026 menu estimates

Yaoji Chaogan

Gulou

Order: Chaogan, baozi, quick breakfast plates

25-45 RMB/person, 2026 estimate

Huguosi Snacks

Multiple branches

Order: Douzhi if curious, rolling donkey, noodle snacks

20-50 RMB/person, 2026 estimate

Fangzhuanchang Zhajiangmian

Gulou / hutong area

Order: Zhajiangmian, cucumber sides, simple cold dishes

30-60 RMB/person, 2026 estimate

Donglaishun or local copper-pot lamb

Wangfujing, Qianmen, neighborhood branches

Order: Hand-cut lamb, sesame dipping sauce, napa cabbage, tofu

120-220 RMB/person, 2026 estimate

Digital nomads

Work setup and longer stays

Beijing works for a week of remote work if you choose the area carefully. It is not the easiest long-stay city in China because distances are big and air quality still has bad days.

Hotel Wi-Fi is inconsistent; carry an eSIM or roaming backup. Cafes around Sanlitun, Guomao, Liangmaqiao, and Wudaokou are easier for laptop time; M Stand, % Arabica, Metal Hands, and larger hotel lobbies are safer bets for stable seating. Coworking day passes usually run 80-180 RMB.

12,000-22,000 RMB/month for a comfortable serviced-apartment lifestyle; 8,000-12,000 RMB is possible with a simpler outer-ring rental, 2026 estimate

FAQ

Common questions

Is Beijing a good first city in China?

Yes, if you want history and can handle reservations, long walks, and some language friction. Shanghai is smoother, but Beijing feels more essential for many first China trips.

How many days do I need in Beijing?

Four full days is the comfortable minimum: one for Forbidden City and Tiananmen, one for the Great Wall, one for Temple of Heaven and hutongs, and one buffer day.

Which Beijing airport should I choose?

Choose PEK for most central or northeast hotels. PKX is fine when flights are much cheaper or your hotel is south Beijing, but do not ignore the transfer time.
