Shanghai Travel 2026: Best Areas, Metro and First Day
Shanghai is the easiest China landing city if payment and transport are ready. Compare hotel areas, airports, skyline walks, food and daily costs.
Best for
Easy arrival, skyline walks, international services, metro simplicity
Time needed
3-4 days
Best season
March-May; October-November
Budget
700-1,400 RMB/day before intercity transport, 2026 prices
Shanghai is the cleanest first landing for many visitors. Line 2, Hongqiao, Pudong, and the Bund all make the city easy to read once you know where the river sits.
Stay west of the river for a first trip if you care about walks, food, and faster daily movement. Pudong is impressive, but Puxi usually saves time.
The city feels international without being generic. You still need to book skyline viewpoints, but the hotel, airport, and metro friction is lower than in Beijing.
Where to stay
Pick the area before the hotel
Puxi is usually better than Pudong for a first stay. Choose based on how much nightlife, walking, and metro access you want. Budget 450-750 RMB/night for clean chain hotels, 800-1,600 RMB for strong mid-range and boutique rooms, and 1,800 RMB+ for luxury river or heritage hotels.
Bund / East Nanjing Road
Short-stay visitors who want the classic postcard zone
700-1,400 RMB/night for mid-range rooms; river-view luxury often 2,000-4,000 RMB+, 2026 checks
Good: Walkable to the river, Yu Garden, and Line 2
Watch: Crowds, tourist pricing, and less local rhythm
Jing'an
Visitors who want a balanced base
800-1,600 RMB/night; good serviced apartments from about 14,000 RMB/month, 2026 checks
Good: Good hotels, easy transfers, decent food, cleaner feel
Watch: Not as scenic as the Bund or the French Concession
Former French Concession
Longer stays, cafes, and slower walking days
900-2,000 RMB/night, 2026 checks
Good: Tree-lined streets, restaurants, and neighborhood texture
Watch: Some listings are farther from the nearest station than they look
Xintiandi / Huaihai Road
Dining, polished nightlife, premium short stays
1,000-2,200 RMB/night; long-stay apartments often 18,000-32,000 RMB/month, 2026 checks
Good: Line 10 and Line 13, restaurants, easy taxis
Watch: Expensive and less everyday-local
Transport
Airport and city movement
PVG is the main international airport; Hongqiao is the city-convenient domestic and regional airport. Line 2 is the visitor spine. Choose Maglev only if Longyang Road makes sense for your hotel or you want the experience.
Route
Cost
Time
PVG to Longyang Road
50 RMB Maglev, 2026 fare
About 8 minutes, then Line 2 or taxi
PVG to central Shanghai by metro

About 60-75 minutes
Hongqiao Airport to central Shanghai

About 25-45 minutes depending on the stop
PVG to central Shanghai by taxi/DiDi
180-320 RMB depending on destination, tolls, and time of day, 2026 estimate
45-90 minutes; late-night arrivals are simpler by car
Use Line 2 for the first trip, Line 10 for the French Concession and Yu Garden side, Line 12/13 for Jing'an and Xintiandi, and DiDi for late-night returns or luggage-heavy moves. The metro is cheap and signed in English; expect last trains around late evening rather than after midnight.
What to see
Book the hard tickets first
The skyline is easy to photograph, but it is better to see it from both sides of the river. Do the riverfront early or at blue hour.
The Bund
Free
1-2 hours
Go at blue hour for the cleanest skyline shots.
Yu Garden
About 30-40 RMB, 2026 estimate
2 hours
Arrive early before the bazaar crowds thicken; reserve online during holidays if capacity controls are active.
Shanghai Tower
Around 180 RMB, 2026 estimate
1-2 hours
Only pay when visibility is actually good.
Shanghai Museum East or People's Square museums
Usually free or low-cost, reservation commonly required
2-4 hours

Former French Concession walk
Free
2-3 hours
Start near Wukang Road or Anfu Road, then use Line 10 or Line 1 when your feet are done.
Food
Meals worth planning around
Shanghai food leans sweeter and more delicate than Sichuan or Beijing. Prioritize xiaolongbao, shengjianbao, scallion oil noodles, red-braised pork, smoked fish, and seasonal hairy crab if you visit in autumn. Dumpling shops are the easy win, but local noodle shops are where the city feels most normal.
Jia Jia Tang Bao
People's Square
Order: Pork xiaolongbao and simple side dishes
35-60 RMB/person, 2026 estimate
Yang's Dumpling
Multiple central branches
Order: Shengjianbao and soup
20-40 RMB/person, 2026 estimate
A local Shanghainese dinner
French Concession or Jing'an
Order: Red-braised pork, river shrimp, seasonal greens
Shanghai is the easiest long-stay base in mainland China if you need English coverage, predictable transport, and a wide range of serviced apartments.
Wi-Fi is usually solid in hotels and coworking spaces. Cafes around Jing'an, Xintiandi, Columbia Circle, and the French Concession are the safest work bets; Manner is good for quick stops, while larger Seesaw, % Arabica, and hotel-lobby cafes are better for calls. Coworking day passes commonly run 100-220 RMB.
12,000-22,000 RMB/month for a comfortable long-stay setup; 18,000-30,000 RMB/month if you want a central serviced apartment with gym access, 2026 estimate

FAQ
Common questions
Is Shanghai a good first city in China?
Yes. It is usually the smoothest first landing because the airport, metro, and hotel setup are easier to manage than in most other major Chinese cities.
Should I stay in Pudong or Puxi?
Puxi is usually better for a first trip. Pudong is good if you need tower views or a business base, but it is less convenient for casual sightseeing.
Do I need the Maglev?
Only if you want the experience or your hotel is very convenient to Longyang Road. For many visitors, Line 2 or a direct taxi is simpler.
